Diesel Fuel Injection

Are you interested in how diesel fuel injection works? While the main intend of the system is to transfer fuel to the cylinders of a diesel engine, it is the way in which the fuel is delivered that makes the difference in the engine’s performance. All diesel engines use fuel injection. The fuel injection system lies at the core of any diesel engine, but how does it work exactly? Let’s look at a quick explanation of the process:

In order for the fuel injection system to work correctly, fuel must be delivered to it from the fuel tank. Engines can either use fuel direct injection, a process where it is directly transferred into the combustion chamber, or indirect injection where the fuel is mixed with air before the intake stroke.

The injector on a diesel engine is its most complicated part – The injector has to be able to resist the temperature and pressure inside the cylinder and still deliver the fuel in a fine mist.

Getting the mist flowing in the cylinder, so that it is evenly distributed, is also an issue. So, some diesel engines use special induction valves, pre-combustion chambers or other devices to circulate the air in the combustion chamber or otherwise improve the ignition and combustion process.
